Summary |
There are many products that keep popping up with the recent lift on the banned ingredient Ephdera. Lipodrene® is similar to other products we have reviewed and contains not only Ephedra, and Caffeine but also Green Tea which is another form of caffeine. The legislation, safety and research of these newly released products are on going.

Lipodrene® contains Sida Cordifolia Extract (which supplies Ephedra in this product), Caffeine, Green Tea Extract and additional ingredients.
* Ephedra (MaHuang) - alkaloids are amphetamine-like compounds with potentially powerful stimulant effects on the nervous system and heart. Ephedra is one of the most dangerous of the weightless dietary supplements. Over 800 injuries have been reported by users and doctors to the FDA and various state medical bodies, including more than 50 deaths. Most of these cases involve heart attacks or high blood pressure, leading to bleeding in the brain or stroke.
* Green Tea Extract - contains the stimulant, caffeine. Excessive caffeine is known to cause restlessness and/or insomnia. Also, people taking aspirin or blood thinning medications should consult their doctor before taking green tea extracts, because green tea extracts may interfere with blood clotting. More studies are still needed to determine if green tea extracts are truly beneficial for weight loss.

* Hoodia - is the latest breakthrough in appetite suppressants, and was mentioned on the program 60 Minutes. Hoodia contains a compound called ‘P57’, which is a molecule that makes you feel full. In clinical trials, two test groups were given equal diets and placed in a setting where they were to remain sedentary. One group was given Hoodia and the other, a placebo. The Hoodia group consumed on average 1000 calories a day less than the placebo group.

As with all products containing Ephedra based ingredients and considering Ephedra’s safety record, research suggests in the meantime, people with high blood pressure or heart disease should still steer clear of all products containing Ephedra. If people do decide to use Ephedra anyway, they should have their blood pressure monitored regularly by a health care professional. Lipodrene® contains Hoodia and we like that, but Lipodrene® additionally contains basic forms of caffeine as active ingredients which may exacerbate the above mentioned conditions.
At present, the future availability of Ephedra in the United States is undetermined.
